Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine is a reminder of our
human capacity to inflict cruelty and suffering. It’s hard to believe we are
witnessing this carnage taking place in Europe during the 21st century.
However, I’m sure historians will be quick to point out, that unless we learn
lessons from the past, we are doomed to repeat them.
On a personal note, the war reminds me of some advice given to me by my late
third husband, Harry Richardson MA (Hons) MBE. Harry served forty years in the
military, both the RAF and the RNZAF. After leaving the air force, he completed
studies in history at the University of Auckland and went on to write two published
books.
The advice I am referring to occurred when I was stressed about a situation in
my work environment. Having listened to my side of the story, Harry suggested I
could be more assertive. He then stated in a more general way that we should
stand up to bullies in all areas of life. At the time I was surprised by the
strength of his feelings. I knew he hated war because of his experience as a
pilot in the second world war. Now he was disclosing a more fundamental
principle. Because I loved and admired Harry, I took notice of his advice. A
more assertive approach did resolve my work problem.
Which brings me back to the Warrior Path. I want to take this opportunity to
honour the heroes of Ukraine. They are fighting for the highest ideals –
democracy and the right to exist as a sovereign nation on their own terms.
I learnt a lot from Harry. Before he died, Harry admitted he’d learnt a lot
from me. One of the many blessings we can expect from a truly loving
relationship.
